Under federal law, healthcare providers must give patients who don't have insurance, or who aren't using insurance, an estimate of expected charges before receiving care.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency services, including related costs like medications or additional visits. You can ask your provider, or any provider you're scheduling with, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.

If you receive a bill that's at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute it. Keep a copy of your estimate for your records.
